What We Do in Cedar City

White Ridge Roofing works on Cedar City homes the same way we would work on our own. We look at the whole roof, not just the spot that is leaking.

Cedar City sits high enough to get real snow and still bakes under summer sun. That combination is hard on shingles, flashing, and the decking underneath.

So the first visit is usually a look, not a sales pitch. We walk the roof when it is safe to, check the penetrations, and get into the attic when we can.

Most of what goes wrong on a roof here starts small. A lifted shingle, a cracked pipe boot, a valley that holds snow a little too long.

Catch it early and it is a repair. Leave it two more winters and you are replacing decking. We will tell you which one you are looking at.

If you want a second opinion on something another contractor told you, call us for that too. Call (801) 880-7663 and we will talk it through.

The Roofing Services We Offer

Most Cedar City calls fall into a handful of jobs. Here is what each one covers.

  • Roof repair

the leak you can point to — a bad boot, failed flashing, missing shingles after a wind event.
  • Emergency roof repair

for water actively coming in. We get it stopped and dried in, then plan the permanent fix.
  • Roof replacement

the call when the shingles are past their service life, or when a home has stacked up too many layers to repair sensibly.
  • Roof inspection

the starting point when you are buying, selling, or just want to know what you are sitting under.
  • Storm damage roof repair

wind and hail work, including documenting what we find for your insurance carrier.
  • Flat roof repair

applies to low-slope sections — porch roofs, additions, and the flat spans common on commercial buildings.
  • Metal roofing

sheds snow well and stands up to sun, which makes it worth a conversation on steeper Cedar City homes.
  • Gutter installation

more here than people think, because meltwater has to go somewhere other than your foundation.

We Know Cedar City

Cedar City is not St. George with a shorter drive. The elevation changes everything about how a roof ages here.

Drive the streets near Lin's Market on a February morning and you will see it. Snow sitting on north-facing slopes while south slopes are already dry.

That uneven melt is what builds ice at the eaves. One side of the house drains, the other side refreezes overnight and backs water up under the shingles.

Around Cedar High School and out toward the America First Event Center, you get a mix of building eras on the same block. A 1960s ranch next to something built in the last fifteen years.

Those homes do not fail the same way, and they should not be quoted the same way either.

The older stock near Frontier Homestead State Park Museum tends toward steeper pitch and smaller footprints. Steep is good for shedding snow and harder on the crew doing the work.

Bicentennial Park gives you a sense of how exposed this valley is. Wind comes through with very little to slow it down.

That is why we pay close attention to edge metal and nailing patterns on every roof we put on here.

What Cedar City Weather Does to a Roof

Snow load is the first thing. Cedar City gets accumulation that stays, and a roof carrying wet snow is carrying real weight.

Most residential framing handles it fine. The problem is what happens at the edge when it starts to melt.

Meltwater runs down a warm roof plane, hits the cold overhang past the heated wall, and refreezes. That ridge of ice dams the water behind it.

Water that cannot drain finds the nail holes. You see the stain on the ceiling in March and assume the leak started in March. It usually started in January.

Then summer arrives and the same roof takes intense high-elevation UV. Asphalt shingles dry out, lose granules, and get brittle at the edges.

Freeze, thaw, bake, repeat. That cycle is why a roof in Cedar City can age faster than the same shingle installed somewhere milder.

Why Ventilation Matters as Much as the Shingle

Here is the part most homeowners never hear. The shingle is only half the system.

A properly vented attic stays close to outside temperature. That means the roof deck stays cold in winter, and snow on it melts evenly or not at all.

An under-vented attic traps heat from the house. The deck warms, the snow melts from underneath, and the water refreezes at the cold eave.

That is an ice dam, and no shingle upgrade fixes it. The fix is intake at the soffit, exhaust at the ridge, and insulation doing its job at the attic floor.

The same ventilation keeps summer heat moving. Trapped attic heat cooks shingles from the back side and shortens their life considerably.

So when we inspect a Cedar City roof, we ask to see the attic. Blocked soffit vents and compressed insulation explain a lot of leaks that look like shingle problems.

Older Homes Near Main Street and SUU

The housing near Main Street and around the Southern Utah University area has its own pattern. Steeper pitches than modern tract homes, and often multiple roofing layers.

Layers matter for two reasons. They add weight, and they hide what is happening to the decking underneath.

A roof with two or three layers cannot simply take another one. Code aside, you cannot assess the deck without tearing off, and nailing through old material rarely holds the way it should.

Steep pitch also changes the work. It is slower, it needs more fall protection, and it affects what a job costs.

Many of these homes have older flashing details at chimneys and sidewalls. That flashing is frequently where the leak actually is, not the field of the roof.

We would rather find that than sell you a whole roof you do not need yet. If a repair buys you several more seasons, that is worth saying out loud.

What an Inspection Actually Involves

People expect us to climb up, glance around, and hand over a number. That is not useful to anybody.

A real roof inspection starts at the ground, looking at drainage, fascia, and whether gutters are pulling away from the house.

Then the roof itself: field condition, granule loss, soft spots underfoot, valleys, and every penetration where something comes through the deck.

Flashing gets its own pass. Chimneys, sidewalls, step flashing, and anywhere two planes meet. That is where most leaks live.

After that, the attic, if there is access. Daylight through the deck, staining on rafters, wet insulation, and whether the vents are doing anything.

You get what we found, with photos, and a plain explanation of what needs doing now versus what can wait.

Storm Damage and Insurance in Cedar City

Wind and hail do happen here, and the damage is not always obvious from the driveway. Bruised shingles can look fine and still be compromised.

If you think a storm hit your roof, have it looked at. Storm damage roof repair starts with documenting what is actually there.

We will photograph what we find and write it up clearly. That documentation goes to your carrier, and your carrier decides the claim.

Nobody roofing your house can promise an approval or sway an adjuster, and you should be skeptical of anyone who says otherwise.

What we can do is make sure the damage is described accurately and completely. A clear report is the best thing you can hand an adjuster.

If water is coming in right now, that is a different call. Ask for emergency roof repair and we will get it stopped first.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roofing in Cedar City

Do you serve the older neighborhoods near Frontier Homestead State Park Museum?

Yes. Those streets have some of the oldest housing in Cedar City, and older roofs often need a different approach than newer construction nearby.

My ceiling stained in spring but there was no rain. Why?

That is usually an ice dam. Meltwater backed up under the shingles during a freeze, then showed up inside once things warmed and drained.

Is metal roofing worth it in Cedar City?

It can be. Metal sheds snow well and handles high-elevation sun, which makes it worth discussing on steeper homes. We will walk through the trade-offs honestly.

How many layers of shingles can my roof have?

Fewer than people hope. If your home near Main Street already carries two or more layers, a tear-off is almost always the right call.

Can you tell if I have hail damage from the ground?

Not reliably. Bruising and fractured mats often look fine from the driveway, which is why a close-up inspection matters after a storm.

Do gutters really matter with this much snow?

Yes. Meltwater has to leave the roof and get away from the foundation. Gutter installation is part of how you manage freeze-thaw here.

Do you work on flat sections over porches and additions?

We do. Low-slope areas drain slowly and hold snow longer, so they need different materials and detailing than the steep portion of your roof.

Will you look at a roof before I buy the house?

Yes. A pre-purchase inspection tells you layer count, deck condition, and remaining service life before you are the one responsible for it.

Do you work on homes out near the America First Event Center?

Yes. That part of town is more exposed to wind, so we pay particular attention to ridge caps, edge metal, and fastening.

What should I do if my roof is leaking tonight?

Call (801) 880-7663. Move what you can out of the way, put a container under the drip, and we will talk about getting it stopped.

What customers say

The entire White Ridge experience was top notch. From the initial consultation to the proposal to the installation. They were so much more focused on quality versus just a transaction. We received 4 quotes and 3 quotes were focused on a cheap roof option that would’ve lasted 10-15 years. Parker and his team walked us through every option and showed us the differences between the shingles and quality.
Jordan Smith
